Here's an article in Canada's National Post about the parlous state of marriage in Canada. (I found the article through andrewsullivan.com.) How did things get so bad? In part because there was liberal pressure to give gay couples the "bennies" of marriage, and there was conservative pressure not to give gay couples the "legitimacy" of marriage. This is precisely the bad outcome I identified in my earlier posts (here and here) on this topic as the best reason for conservatives to support a gay equivalent of marriage - i.e. a union sanctioned by the state, with the benefits of marriage, and open only to same-sex couples.
