Very good defense by Gregg Easterbrook of The New Republic's responsible environmentalism against the extremism of the movement in general - and the Democratic Party's irresponsible obeisance to it.

There is now a universal political consensus in favor of ever-improving environmental quality. You would think that this would make the issue less contentious, that we could all work together on sensible policies that deliver that improvement at minimal cost. But then, what would all these lobbying groups do to raise money?

As I recall, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle put one of these guys in the fourth circle of Dante's Inferno ("Avarice"), eternally pedalling a bicycle that, whenever he stops pedalling, emits a choking black smoke.
